Mass Communications, Ph.D.


Learning Outcomes


  • Students will demonstrate effective writing and critical thinking skills and the application of those skills in journalism and mass communications scholarship suitable for high level peer-reviewed journals in the field.  
  • Students will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of advanced statistics and quantitative research methodology appropriate for journalism and mass communications scholarship, including the application of such statistics in their own research and the ability to correctly evaluate the use of advanced statistics in peer-reviewed research. 
  • Students will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of journalism and mass communications theory and theory development, including familiarity with contemporary scholarship involving major journalism and mass communications theories and theory-building, and an understanding of the mass media as social institutions.
  • Students will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of qualitative research methodology appropriate for journalism and mass communications scholarship, including the application of such methods in cultural and critical studies, historical, or legal scholarship and the ability to correctly evaluate the use of qualitative research methodology in peer-reviewed research. 
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the mass media as social institutions. Students will demonstrate an expertise in at least one area related to mass communications.  Such areas might include media processes and effects, attitude and public opinion formation or culture and society. 
  • Students will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of theories and practices of university-level instruction, and will be able to apply them to teaching journalism and mass communications.
